SIDE UNDERRIDE GUARDS SAVE LIVES
Fifty years ago Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield died on a Louisiana highway when her car crashed under the rear of a semi trailer. Her tragic death sparked a public outcry for safety features to protect motorists in future accidents. But it wasn’t until 1998 that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated rear guards — known as Mansfield bars — on trailers.
Side underrides kill hundreds and injure thousands every year. Side guards have been mandatory in Europe for decades however they are still not required in the United States even though the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded side guards would reduce injuries and deaths on America’s roads.
In 2014 NHTSA “recommended” that all new trailers have side protection systems. But they are still not mandated in the United States… why?
According to OpenSecrets.org, members of the Senate Commerce committee received more than $9 million from the transportation industry in the last six years. The trucking sector, which includes both manufacturers and operators, accounted for $1 million of that amount with Sen. John Thune, R-South Dakota, (committee chairman since 2015) receiving $830,341 from the transportation industry during the same period; the trucking sector donated $133,250 of that amount.
Its time our government mandates these simple cost effective safety devices to reduce fatalities and injuries on our roads. This isn’t just a highway issue. Thousand of pedestrians and bicyclists are injured every year by trucks turning on our city streets.
